Baltic Summer

Product information "Baltic Summer"

Summers of my childhood were spent camping on the island Fehmarn (Baltic Sea), where my father had grown up and my mom had strong family ties. During the six weeks of summer vacation, we had a few lazy sunny days at the beach, where we snacked on rolls with cheese and wurst prepared in the morning that had that certain beachy taste and crunched from the grains of sand they had gathered. Most of the time it rained hard, and we would sit in our caravan playing cards, snuggled up in the few summer clothes we had packed while being too optimistic about the weather. On those days, this shawlette would have been perfect: The colors of the Baltic Sea and the rain, and a pattern of small summery waves, adding just a little warmth on not-so-hot summer days.

The shawlette is knit on the bias, giving the classic chevron pattern an unusual twist. Each side of the triangle shows a differently shaped wave – just like the Baltic Sea in wild weather.

In this video I talk about the yarn and the pattern.

Hitchhiker
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Well, if you use a 150 g skein of Wollmeise 100% Merino for this, you can make how many teeth? That‘s right, 42. The answer to the question about the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams‘ wonderful book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“. So don‘t forget your towel, and happy knitting! The pattern "Hitchhiker" is avaliable in Martina Behm´s books "The Hitchhiker Collection" and "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions"

Hitchhiker Beyond
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Hey, is that a Hitchhiker? No wait, something is different... There are teeth all around your neck! And many more than 42! And it’s symmetric! How did you do that? Simple: This is not a Hitchhiker, but a Hitchhiker from a parallel universe – it’s a Hitchhiker Beyond! The toothy edge is placed on the long side of the skinny triangle (on the original Hitchhiker, it’s on one of the short sides). The triangle is almost perfectly symmetric, which I am sure some of you will find very pleasing. But apart from that, the Hitchhiker Beyond shares the desirable qualities of its cousin: Garter stitch on the bias lets a pretty handdyed multicolor shine, it is squishy and warm, and the resulting shape is easy to wear. Only one skein of colorful fingering weight yarn will make a shawlette long enough to wrap around your neck several times. And just as the Hitchhiker, the Hitchhiker Beyond is an easy knit that is suitable for beginning knitters – and for those of you who do not like casting on or casting off lots of stitches. Enjoy, relax, and have fun showing this off to your knitting friends! Adaptable to amount of yarn. Yarn used here: 100 g of Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply, Colorway Dream Weaver. The pattern "Hitchhiker Beyond" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".
