Hey, is that a Hitchhiker? No wait, something is different... There are teeth all around your neck! And many more than 42! And it’s symmetric! How did you do that?

Simple: This is not a Hitchhiker, but a Hitchhiker from a parallel universe – it’s a Hitchhiker Beyond! The toothy edge is placed on the long side of the skinny triangle (on the original Hitchhiker, it’s on one of the short sides). The triangle is almost perfectly symmetric, which I am sure some of you will find very pleasing. But apart from that, the Hitchhiker Beyond shares the desirable qualities of its cousin: Garter stitch on the bias lets a pretty handdyed multicolor shine, it is squishy and warm, and the resulting shape is easy to wear. Only one skein of colorful fingering weight yarn will make a shawlette long enough to wrap around your neck several times. And just as the Hitchhiker, the Hitchhiker Beyond is an easy knit that is suitable for beginning knitters – and for those of you who do not like casting on or casting off lots of stitches. Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. “Brickless” was designed for the Miss Babs 2012 Knitting Tour, and was exclusive to the members of the Tour for six months. Berlin in Winter is colder than most other big German cities – when travelling there, a big, cozy shawlette like this will come in handy! The beautiful colors are reminiscent of bright city lights in dark winter nights. The shape of the shawlette is an asymmetrical, long triangle, formed by rows that are getting longer and longer as you go. They are worked in different simple, but very effective patterns that make them look a little like a skyline of tall houses. These skyscrapers are not built with bricks, but concrete and steel – hence the name, „Brickless“. And also: No more bricks in the wall that used to divide Berlin.The pattern "Brickless" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Why garter stitch is my favorite? Well, mostly, you don‘t have to purl.That makes it easy and relaxing to knit. It might take a little longer for progress to show because you need to work more rows than, say, in stockinette stitch to see what you have done. But that is made up for by that wonderful stretchy fabric that is such a pleasure to wear and makes fingering weight yarn warm and cozy. Plus: Most hand-dyed yarns look really fab in it. So I just could not resist to design another little garter stitch shawlette: Lintilla. It comes with a special long and narrow triangular, slightly asymmetrical construction and a beautiful scalloped, subtly ruffled edge that is really fun to make. This is my fourth shawlette that is named after Douglas Adams‘ „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“ series: Lintilla an intelligent and beautiful woman (she appeared only in the BBC radio play, not in the books), who was accidentally cloned too many times – so her pretty face could be spotted in every part of the galaxy. Who knows, maybe that‘s what‘s going to happen to this shawlette as well? This pattern, as the other triangular shawls I have designed, is very flexible: You can use any amount of yarn and end up with a small neckerchief, a small or bigger shawlette. To achieve the size shown in the pictures, you will need about 525 m (575 yards) of fingering weight yarn.
