Ayni by Amano is made from 80% Baby Alpaca and 20% Silk, yardage is about 200 meters / 218 yards / 50 g, so it's perfect for light but warm shawls like Rockin' Rows or Snowflake Party. The fiber comes from cooperatives in Peru which employ the latest methods to ensure an animal-friendly environment and minimal impact on the surroundings. The high plains of the Andes are home to three and a half million alpacas. They have been living in this area for more than 5000 years and learned to thrive despite the rough climate and scarce food supply, earning their wool a reputation to be the most sustainable animal fiber there is. Alpaca fiber is significantly warmer than wool from sheep, it is very soft and has an attractive lustre – a dream for any knitter. It is processed by a spinning mill in the south of Peru to become one of the luxurious knitting yarns by Amano: blended with silk, merino or cashmere or pure as Baby or Imperial Alpaca in gorgeous, vibrant colors inspired by the textile traditions of South America.

Kremke Soul Wool Lazy Lion Sock Yarn

This is probably the softest sock yarn in the whole wild world – and it's made out of mulesing-free Merino fiber from South Africa. Hence the name! Besides the softness, the best thing about this yarn is that it is color-changing: As you knit, exciting stripes in a number of color combinations will emerge. It's perfect for an interestingly constructed shawl like Easy, Puerto Montt or Match & Move. "Lazy Lion" is superwash and consists of 25% Nylon, so it will be durable enough for socks and other hard-wearing garments – all of this while being incredibly soft! The sample "Trillian" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Brittas Favorite".The sample "Puerto Montt" on the cover of "Strickmich! I just love the “We’re Different”-Grab Bags from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise: Depending on which kind you choose, you will get a combination of a multicolor and a matching semisolid, hand-picked by the dyemaster herself, who has an unmatched sense of color. What shall I say? I was really surprised when I saw that she teamed up a softly variegated brown-grey with a bold and warm red. I just had to give it a try and get my knitting needles moving! So here’s “Match & Move”, a shawl designed to show off the perfect Wollmeise color combination and use up (almost!) an entire grab bag of yarn. My shawl weighs 286 grams. The unusual construction results in kinked stripes that look really interesting when you wear it. The knitting is plain garter stitch and very relaxing, and the shawl is so big and comfy, it is just a dream to wear. Definitely my favorite shawl so far – and I am determined to order another grab bag, be surprised and knit myself one more. Like a shower of comets and stars, criss-crossing through the sky – that’s what Alexandra of Zauberwiese thought of when she created this beautiful colorway for Strickmich! Club. So I picked up this theme for the design of a lacy shawl: The garter stitch gives way to an ever-growing assembly of geometric comet traces. The shawl is named “Halley” after Halley’s Comet, which is visible from Earth every 74 to 79 years, even without a telescope. The subtle color speckles on a stunning blue background make the shawl even more interesting to knit and wear – reminding you of the wonders of the universe while it warms your shoulders. One night I watched an Episode of “Sherlock” – it was the one in which Mr Watson has a wife, Mrs Watson. She was wearing a dress with an allover-leaf-pattern that served as an inspiration for this shawl. Its construction was, when I designed it in the beginning of 2015, completely new. It was part of a collection for the yarn company Berroco who published it in June 2015. In the meantime, I had used this new construction for the Strickmich! Club pattern “Thousand Tulips” and “Match & Move”. I must say, I am a little bit proud of myself: This construction, that has inspired so many, was invented by me. Mrs Watson is knit out of a super-soft Alpaca yarn and the pretty leaves are shaped by short rows – but don’t worry, you won’t have to pick up the wraps, so it’s a relaxing knit! You need 2 skeins in color A and one skein in the contrasting color for the leaves.
