Pattern for the 2nd Strickmich! Club shipment 2014

Sometimes, the world around me seems a little bit too loud, too crowded, too busy. When that happens, I take out my knitting, find a place to sit and feel how the noise slowly disappears while I knit one stitch after another. As I focus on the work of my hands, I notice how my mind regains clarity and strength – a state called “Samadhi” in the ancient Asian language Pali. This little shawlette has received its name because it is such a relaxing knit that it feels almost like meditation to make it. The pale turquoise color with its special hand-dyed glow will take your eyes on a vacation, and the warm merino wool will feel like a soft breeze in your hands. The resulting shawlette has a subtle wavy border and is light and small enough to be worn in warmer weather.

Luxurious and so soft! "Fino" by Manos del Uruguay is a voluminous single-ply consisting of 30% silk and 70% merino wool – really soft and perfect for a pretty shawl like Samadhi, Baltic Summer, Hitchhiker, Heaven & Space or Lintilla. The multicolored versions are perfect for Martina's designs, and one skein of 450 m per 100 g will yield a decently sized shawl. The yarn is hand dyed by a cooperative in Uruguay that offers employment to rural women in difficult life situations. The merino fiber comes from South America and is mulesing-free. Please note: Handwash only. The sample "Samadhi" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Watered Silk".The sample "Wolkig" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Silver Teaset".

Circular Knitting Needle Addi Lace

Addi Circulars with 80 cm (32 in) length and extra sharp tips are ideally suited for most of Martina Behm's designs. These needles are great quality "Made in Germany", and they make even the most complicated lace pattern a pleasure to knit. The needle sizes are printed on the cable (metric and US). Addi lace needle tips are made nickel-free.

Why garter stitch is my favorite? Well, mostly, you don‘t have to purl.That makes it easy and relaxing to knit. It might take a little longer for progress to show because you need to work more rows than, say, in stockinette stitch to see what you have done. But that is made up for by that wonderful stretchy fabric that is such a pleasure to wear and makes fingering weight yarn warm and cozy. Plus: Most hand-dyed yarns look really fab in it. So I just could not resist to design another little garter stitch shawlette: Lintilla. It comes with a special long and narrow triangular, slightly asymmetrical construction and a beautiful scalloped, subtly ruffled edge that is really fun to make. This is my fourth shawlette that is named after Douglas Adams‘ „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“ series: Lintilla an intelligent and beautiful woman (she appeared only in the BBC radio play, not in the books), who was accidentally cloned too many times – so her pretty face could be spotted in every part of the galaxy. Who knows, maybe that‘s what‘s going to happen to this shawlette as well? This pattern, as the other triangular shawls I have designed, is very flexible: You can use any amount of yarn and end up with a small neckerchief, a small or bigger shawlette. To achieve the size shown in the pictures, you will need about 525 m (575 yards) of fingering weight yarn. First pattern from Strickmich! Club 2017. She was known as fearless, she loved her freedom, her music and the stage: Janis Joplin. In the 60s, everything she did was revolutionary. She left Texas to sing with a band in San Francisco, she cried and screamed during her performances and became ecstatic when she saw people dance to her music. While other women of her generation still wore stiff hairdos and little pastel suits during their days at the office, Janis put purple feathers in her hair, threw on a gold-glittering crocheted vest, shook her hair and rocked the stage and the whole world of music. She sang the blues like no other. She was rebellious, free, feminine and incredibly talented – which makes her an inspiration up until today, more than 45 years after her death. When hand-dyer Danica told me she had named the color for this club shipment after a movie based on Janis Joplin’s life, I designed a shawl that would play with the elements of hippie fashion: Net lace in triangular shapes mirroring the bell-bottomed pants that were popular in that era – playful, but not naively nice. They are worked with short rows that are incorporated in the lace, easy to execute without wrapping stitches. Hitchhiker

Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Well, if you use a 150 g skein of Wollmeise 100% Merino for this, you can make how many teeth? That‘s right, 42. The answer to the question about the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams‘ wonderful book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“.
