Shore Hap Joy

Product information "Shore Hap Joy"

Dark skies and blue waters, pebbly beaches, brown seaweed, blackened wood and stormy gray clouds – those are the colors of the very north of Germany: Schleswig-Holstein, my home. What shall I say? I grew up here, and despite having lived in warmer and friendlier parts of this planet, I would not want to be anywhere else. The climate is a good excuse to wear wool (almost) year-round, especially around the neck and shoulders – areas that are most affected by winds and weather when taking a walk outside.
My interpretation of the hap is inspired by the colors of Schleswig-Holstein, which also seem to be the colors most loved and worn by its inhabitants – probably because they are stain-proof and flattering at the same time. Traditional festive dresses of the islands of the North Sea are dark brown with blue trims, and sailors, a frequent sight in the cities with big harbors, used to wear blue and white striped uniforms. The shape of my hap is that of a modified sailor’s collar with a triangular instead of a square back. This struck me as especially useful, as it can be wrapped and tied in various ways around your shoulders and is likely to stay put and keep you warm, even if you are working around the house and garden, carrying firewood or sweeping your yard.

The long ends of the hap could be tucked into the front of an apron or skirt – which is probably why I found a shawl shaped like this one in the Flensburg Museum. But I am sure you will  find your own flattering way to wear this interesting shape. Worked in a modern smooth and lightweight superwash merino yarn, it will wash well and keep you good company for many years to come. Made entirely in garter stitch, the knitting process is easy and relaxing and will easily fit into your life, no matter how busy.

We carry the yarn used for this pattern (Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy) in many pretty colors in our shop.

The design "Shore Hap" was originally published in the Book of Haps by Kate Davies, knit out of fingering weight yarn. If you would like to make the shawl in a fingering weight yarn, I recommend using the pattern from the Book, which is NOT included when purchasing this pattern. "Shore Hap Joy" was re-written for a sportweight yarn.

Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy
Color Rosy Green Wool: 063 Tiefer Ozean
This yarn is pure joy: 100% Merino superwash from Argentina, spun in a traditional mill in the UK, GOTS-certified (i. e. produced animal- and eco-friendly) – and soooo supersoft! I do not know many yarns that feel as good as this next to your skin – so it's ideal for shawls, hats and scarves as well as baby clothing. My patterns Matchmaker (DK-Version) and Naiada, as well as Braidsmaid, Heaven & Space, Buds & Bumbles and Brickless are perfect with this yarn, but also my hat patterns Tensfield, Langfield, Blunk the Hat turn out wonderfully in this yarn. The "Melange" colors of Cheeky Merino Joy by Rosy Green Wool have an interesting, almost rustic look to them – while being just as soft as their solid cousins! This is achieved by dyeing a part of the white merino fiber in a dark color before it is spun in to yarn. The colors that are dyed on the skeins will then have a beautiful heathered effect. The sample "Knitters DNA" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of two skeins of this yarn, colorway "Sea Green". The sample "Rose Candy" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was knit out of 1 skein of this yarn in color "Eismeer" and 1 skein in color "Nachthimmel".  My patterns  Obvious, Shore Hap Joy, Shrug & More, Corners, Edges, Stripes and  Liebe Hannah were written specifically for this yarn.

Puerto Montt

Striking and intense, dramatic color and contrast, and fascinating geometric shapes are what you can see if you board a ship in Puerto Montt in the very South of Chile and travel a few nautic miles to the Laguna San Rafael, where a bright teal-colored glacier lies between dark rocks, and if you are lucky you can see chunks of the ice break off and fall spectacularly into the water. My husband and I spent a year in Chile, and we took our baby son on a cruise to this place, because I insisted that the only thing I really, really needed to see in Chile was the teal-blue glacier. When this yarn arrived, I was immediately reminded of the strange beauty of that place – and created an unusually shaped shawl which is simple, but dramatically shaped and can be worn in various flattering ways. Enjoy!  Gradient striped version uses 100 g of Schoppel Crazy Zauberball, colorway “Blasser Schimmer”The pattern "Puerto Montt" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Hitchhiker
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Well, if you use a 150 g skein of Wollmeise 100% Merino for this, you can make how many teeth? That‘s right, 42. The answer to the question about the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams‘ wonderful book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“. So don‘t forget your towel, and happy knitting! The pattern "Hitchhiker" is avaliable in Martina Behm´s books "The Hitchhiker Collection" and "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions"

Brickless
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
“Brickless” was designed for the Miss Babs 2012 Knitting Tour, and was exclusive to the members of the Tour for six months. Berlin in Winter is colder than most other big German cities – when travelling there, a big, cozy shawlette like this will come in handy! The beautiful colors are reminiscent of bright city lights in dark winter nights. The shape of the shawlette is an asymmetrical, long triangle, formed by rows that are getting longer and longer as you go. They are worked in different simple, but very effective patterns that make them look a little like a skyline of tall houses. These skyscrapers are not built with bricks, but concrete and steel – hence the name, „Brickless“. And also: No more bricks in the wall that used to divide Berlin. The pattern "Brickless" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".
