Easy and relaxing, very few purl stitches or complicated techniques, suitable for colorful yarns with fun original constructions – that’s what makes Martina Behm’s knitting patterns special. In “Strickmich! Knitting Inventions” she has gathered 20 of her designs that are departures from the traditional ways of making shawls, hats or cowls: “Hitchhiker” is one of the most popular knitting designs around the world and became the blueprint for a whole new family of knitted shawls. Other inventive constructions, like those of “Nuvem” and “Match & Move”, can be found in many other knitting patterns today.

Martina’s designs are perfect for beginners and those who return to knitting after a long break – and for everyone who likes their knitting easy but clever!

Stricken macht Schön
This book is only available in german. The Knitter, Sabrina Special, 08.2013

Hitchhiker
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Well, if you use a 150 g skein of Wollmeise 100% Merino for this, you can make how many teeth? That‘s right, 42. The answer to the question about the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams‘ wonderful book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“. So don‘t forget your towel, and happy knitting! The pattern "Hitchhiker" is avaliable in Martina Behm´s books "The Hitchhiker Collection" and "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions"

Nuvem
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
„Nuvem“ is Portuguese and means „Cloud“. I picked this name because this shawl is light as a feather, super-warm and cozy, and its ruffled edge makes it look like a little cloud if you wrap it around your neck and shoulders several times. This one will warm you on chilly winter evenings on the sofa and will protect you on cold winter days outside under or over your favorite coat. In a colorful, hand-dyed laceweight yarn, it looks beautiful without using any complicated stitches. In fact, once you are done casting on, there are only knit stitches (no purling required!) and simple increases. If you have a beautiful, big skein of multicolored laceyarn and you are in the mood for a long, relaxing haul of almost mindless knitting, this is the project for you! Also, a good “first big project“ for beginning knitters. Nuvem is shaped as a very long hexagon, which makes it very versatile: It replaces a cardigan when just thrown over the shoulders, it transforms to a big, long scarf when folded lengthwise, and it can be anything in between. You start in the middle using Judy‘s magic cast-on and knit in the round until 20% of your yarn is left. Then you create the ruffle and bind off. For the size shown in the pictures, you will need around 1590m (1740 yards) of laceweight. You can make this shawl using less yarn, but naturally it will come out smaller. The pattern "Nuvem" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Viajante
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
– no purling required! – I love long, triangular shawls: They are just the thing to keep your neck and shoulders warm during winter. But then I thought: How about making one that, instead of just being a flat piece of fabric, is three-dimensional, knit in the round and doubles as a big loop, hood and very big cowl? Well, here it is: Viajante (Portuguese for ”traveller“) takes your knitting to another dimension! You can use an entire skein of Wollmeise Lace that will result in a 220 x 60 cm shawl. You can use less yarn if you want it to be smaller, the pattern is adaptable. Viajante is basically a very long and narrow triangular tube. Used flat, you can wrap it around your neck several times or put it on your shoulders as you would with a shawl. Open it up at the lace border and pull it over your head, and it will keep your entire upper body warm. If you wish, you can use it to add a dramatic asymmetrical silhouette to your wardrobe. Best thing: If you forgot your hat, you can just pull the narrow garter stitch part over your head and hide your ears from the cold. It is so versatile you will not want to leave the house without it! Viajante has a clean, classic look in stockinette stitch that is particularly pretty in a slightly variegated, very light yarn. The lace mesh border is really easy to knit (even for beginners) but can be replaced by a more complicated lace pattern or a simple ruffle if you prefer. It is a long, relaxing knit without any purl stitches that yields a spectacular result. Here’s a video that shows how to wear Viajante. Here’s another video that shows you how to do the increases. Viajante fits all sizes as the narrow part is supposed to be draped around the neck such that any shoulder width can be accomodated. The mesh border has a circumference of roughly 300 cm. If you wish to make a bigger neck opening (which reduces the total wingspan of the shawl), you will find instructions in the pattern. The pattern "Viajante" is part of Martina Behms book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Matchmaker
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Cowls and loops are just wonderful: You sling them around and you’re ready to go! Also, I really like how roomy and warm they are. And since I wanted one that looks good in my favorite hand-dyed yarn, I made Matchmaker. Its very special triangular but 3-dimensional shape makes it very versatile and warm in the right places. Entirely knit in garter stitch, it is a mindless pleasure to knit. I called this one “Matchmaker”, because you can choose your two favorite hand-dyed colorways and marry them to this comfy, squishy, oversized cowl (the perfect use for Wollmeise’s “We’re Different”-bags!). The design is such that there are no spooky techniques involved (like provisional cast-ons, short rows or the like), and there is no joining in the round where you might accidentally twist something. Just straightforward knitting and a few increases and decreases - very suitable for beginners! The pattern provides 3 versions: The Pure Version for a fingering weight yarn, the DK Version and a Freestyle Version that instructs you to use a different yarn of your choosing, with stripes wherever you want them. Please check out this little video in which I explain how Matchmaker works. The colors I used in my protoypes are: Wollmeise Pure: Xaverl (Color A, 135g) and So long Kitty (Color B, 150g) Wollmeise Pure: Vincent (Color A, 135g) and Sail the 7 Seas (Color B, 150g)Wollmeise Merino DK: Dunkle Kirsche (Color A, 165g) and Tutu dark (Color B, 155g)The pattern "Matchmaker" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Match & Move
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
I just love the “We’re Different”-Grab Bags from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise: Depending on which kind you choose, you will get a combination of a multicolor and a matching semisolid, hand-picked by the dyemaster herself, who has an unmatched sense of color. What shall I say? I was really surprised when I saw that she teamed up a softly variegated brown-grey with a bold and warm red. I just had to give it a try and get my knitting needles moving! So here’s “Match & Move”, a shawl designed to show off the perfect Wollmeise color combination and use up (almost!) an entire grab bag of yarn. My shawl weighs 286 grams. The unusual construction results in kinked stripes that look really interesting when you wear it. The knitting is plain garter stitch and very relaxing, and the shawl is so big and comfy, it is just a dream to wear. Definitely my favorite shawl so far – and I am determined to order another grab bag, be surprised and knit myself one more. Size of the shawl in the pictures: 200 x 50 cm (80 x 20 inches) 286 g of yarn (140 g of color A and 146 g of color B) Wollmeise Colors: Resi and Zimtapfel (both WD)The pattern "Match & Move" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Tensfield
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Got this skein of pretty gradient yarn and still looking for the perfect pattern? Here it is: Make a simple but cleverly constructed hat that brings out the beauty of those color changes. Or pick up some colorful sock yarn leftovers and go crazy with stripes! It will fit your head (or your husbands’ or your toddler’s) perfectly, no matter what weight your yarn is or what gauge you are knitting at. You can adjust the size as you go. The knitting is straight-forward back-and-forth garter stitch, but you will certainly enjoy the interesting 3-dimensional construction. This hat is a quick knit that even adventurous beginners will be able to master. The name? The angled stripes reminded me of the fields surrounding our village. This is a beanie pattern. If you prefer a slouchier hat or one that you can fold up, have a look at Langfield. Techniques: Garter stitch, k2tog, increases by m1 and kfb. When finishing this hat, you can either use a 3-needle-bind-off for the little remaining gap at the top or grafting. Don’t worry if you have never done this before – I have an instructional video here. Yarn used for hats in the pictures: • Schoppel Gradient, Color Papagei, 60 g, Needle 3.5 mm • Mystery Handspun Alpaca yarn from Chile, 130 g, Needle 5.0 mm • Zitron Nimbus, Color No. 13, 60 g, Needle 4.0 mm • Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply, Colors Pewter, Ansel, Envy me, Impatiens, 55 g, needle 2.5 mmThe pattern "Tensfield" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Rose Candy
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Rose Candy was the last pattern of Strickmich! Club 2015. Warm and fun – that’s what a knitting project for the cold season should be like to cheer us up during the dark days of winter. Make a cozy stripey cowl in garter stitch, just knitting back and forth and joining the parts modularly. No purling, no seaming, just pure fun with stripes! If you have twice the amount of yarn available, you can make your cowl longer so that it doubles as a very warm scarf – the sweet icing on the cake of our Strickmich! Club year 2015! The yarn is an animal-friendly supersoft merino in a very special, limited colorway that will make your cheeks glow with joy. Here is a video in which I talk about the yarn and the design: Cast-On-2015-4 from Martina Behm on Vimeo. The pattern "Rose Candy" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Easy
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Shawlettes in garter stitch are my favorite: They look great in a colorful yarn, they are squishy and warm your neck, and they are so easy to knit that even beginners will enjoy making them. This shawlette is named “Easy” because it is just that: So simple to knit, but the biased construction and change of knitting direction will bring out the best of a multicolored yarn. It is long and skinny and can be wrapped around several times, or tied with a knot – and it uses only 459 yards of fingering weight yarn. Length: approx. 200 cm (80 inches), Depth approx. 24 cm (10 inches) You start in one corner and knit a long triangle until 50% of your yarn is used up. Then you change the direction and modularly add a second triangle (no seaming required) – and you have made a colorful addition to your wardrobe! The pattern "Easy" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Hitchhiker Beyond
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Hey, is that a Hitchhiker? No wait, something is different... There are teeth all around your neck! And many more than 42! And it’s symmetric! How did you do that? Simple: This is not a Hitchhiker, but a Hitchhiker from a parallel universe – it’s a Hitchhiker Beyond! The toothy edge is placed on the long side of the skinny triangle (on the original Hitchhiker, it’s on one of the short sides). The triangle is almost perfectly symmetric, which I am sure some of you will find very pleasing. But apart from that, the Hitchhiker Beyond shares the desirable qualities of its cousin: Garter stitch on the bias lets a pretty handdyed multicolor shine, it is squishy and warm, and the resulting shape is easy to wear. Only one skein of colorful fingering weight yarn will make a shawlette long enough to wrap around your neck several times. And just as the Hitchhiker, the Hitchhiker Beyond is an easy knit that is suitable for beginning knitters – and for those of you who do not like casting on or casting off lots of stitches. Enjoy, relax, and have fun showing this off to your knitting friends! Adaptable to amount of yarn. Yarn used here: 100 g of Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply, Colorway Dream Weaver. The pattern "Hitchhiker Beyond" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Tough & Toasty
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Wearing little fingerless mittens like these somehow makes me feel a little tougher – maybe that’s because leather versions of this are frequently worn by bikers, cyclists or people operating some kind of heavy machinery. Well, the only machinery I tend to operate is my keyboard, but these mitts do a fabulous job keeping my hands toasty! They are made of a luxurious, but resistant blend of wool and alpaca, so they are cozy and warm but will wear well, no matter what task is at hand. They are intentionally short in order not to cause bulk when wearing them with long sleeves and to make sure you have easy access to your wristwatch. One pair uses up only half a ball (25 g) of yarn and can be finished in one or two nights of knitting – great if you need a last-minute gift. The unusual construction works (almost) without purl stitches and can be adapted to the recipient’s hand size during the knitting, so you can substitute yarns and knit them at a different gauge if desired. This pattern is written for one long circular needle. If you would like to use dpns, please be aware that there are no instructions given for how to use them with this pattern and you would have to make the necessary adjustments yourself. Yarn used in the samples: Blacker Yarns Brushwork, colors Wash, Stipple and Scumble. The pattern "Tough & Toasty" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Green and light – that means green lights for everyone who would like to endeavor their very first lace project! It starts with simple garter stitch on the bias, the lace border is knit on last. The result is a classically elegant crescent shaped symmetric shawl, light as a feather and warm and comfy at the same time, in a fascinating exotic yarn. The shape is achieved by stacking two simple geometric shapes onto one another, all in garter stitch to keep it simple. The attractive lace edging is attached perpendicularly as the final step. A nice project to start at home and take on vacation: Work on the mindless and relaxing garter stitch part while still at home and working, and save the slightly more complicated lace part for when you have arrived at your destination, are relaxed and have lots of time to knit the lace border in your deck chair. Less than one skein of an ultralight blend of yak and silk results in a shawl that will fit women of all sizes. If you would like to make it even bigger, go ahead and use up your entire skein. The pattern "Green Light Shawl" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Ecken + Kanten PDF Download
Language: Deutsch
Long, triangular scarves are just the perfect thing to keep one‘s neck warm – and men want them, too! So here is „Ecken + Kanten“ which is German for „Corners and Edges“. When we say that someone possesses „Ecken und Kanten“, we mean he is a strong, sometimes challenging character, which makes him even more lovable. This garter stitch scarf is an easy knit, while the modular construction keeps things interesting. A good beginners‘ project or a relaxing one for advanced knitters. The result is perfect for men (and women) big and small. The pattern can be adapted to any amount of yarn: 100g of fingering weight will result in a shorter scarf that is still big enough to wrap around and wear like a cowl, while 150g will result in a longer scarf. You start knitting at one corner until 25% of your yarn is used up. Then you change the direction of knitting 3 times, modularly forming 4 triangles and bind off.The pattern "Ecken + Kanten" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Puerto Montt
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Striking and intense, dramatic color and contrast, and fascinating geometric shapes are what you can see if you board a ship in Puerto Montt in the very South of Chile and travel a few nautic miles to the Laguna San Rafael, where a bright teal-colored glacier lies between dark rocks, and if you are lucky you can see chunks of the ice break off and fall spectacularly into the water. My husband and I spent a year in Chile, and we took our baby son on a cruise to this place, because I insisted that the only thing I really, really needed to see in Chile was the teal-blue glacier. When this yarn arrived, I was immediately reminded of the strange beauty of that place – and created an unusually shaped shawl which is simple, but dramatically shaped and can be worn in various flattering ways. Enjoy!  Gradient striped version uses 100 g of Schoppel Crazy Zauberball, colorway “Blasser Schimmer”The pattern "Puerto Montt" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Spiral Escape
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
This is the third pattern of Strickmich! Club 2017. Dark alleys, intense colors, unforgettable melodies and a tragic love story – “West Side Story” is one of the biggest music movies of all time, and great to watch while knitting. Preferably something that goes well with the colors and theme of the film, like “Spiral Escape”: A cowl made from a gradient yarn whose colors resemble those of the backgrounds in the movie. The spiraled construction mirrors the iconic fire escape stairs that are a visual theme of the musical and New York City. And this cowl is really easy to knit! Start with a little square and go on in garter stitch, knitting back and forth while forming the spiraled shape on the go by simply knitting two stitches together. No seaming! The last finishing touches are done with a crochet hook. The result is a warm and beautiful cowl in fascinating dark and intense colors, perfect to wear during fall. In this video I talk about the pattern and the yarn: Cast-On-Event-3-2017 from Martina Behm. The pattern "Spiral Escape" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Strider
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Take a deep breath, enjoy the view, walk a few miles in a bizarre landscape that was left behind by the gravel mines surrounding our village – that’s what I enjoy every day. “Strider” is a scarf that has proven immensely useful during my walks: In the middle, it is pointy as a shawl for extra warmth on the chest, but the ends are square. This fun geometric construction is accentuated by a pretty color-changing yarn. Entirely knit in garter stitch with super simple and short instructions, it is perfectly suited for a beginning knitter. Bonus: You can make this bigger by using more yarn – just knit until everything is used up.  The pattern "Strider" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Berry Skies
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
A cowl that looks like a scarf that looks like a shawl, is an easy-peasy knit and has an unusual construction, accentuated by stripes in my most beloved colors – that sounds like a new favorite project of mine, and that’s exactly what “Berry Skies” is! I have been playing around with different ways of making cowls, and this one struck me as particularly suited for a “Trio Aquarell” by Dibadu: Three colors with just enough contrast to emphasize the stripes and zig-zags that are in perfect harmony nevertheless – just like clouds in the sky over Damsdorf, my home, at sunset. The cowl is entirely knit back and forth in garter stitch with only a few purl stitches and minimal ends to weave in when you are done. Depending on which side you decide to wear up, the light or dark colors will show more. Choose your favorite way to wear it, and the geometric zig-zag elements will be more prominent or less, making it one of the most versatile knitted pieces of your wardrobe! The pattern "Berry Skies" is part of Martina Behm´s book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions".

Color Rosy Green Wool: 108 Nachthimmel
This yarn is pure joy: 100% Merino superwash from Argentina, spun in a traditional mill in the UK, GOTS-certified (i. e. produced animal- and eco-friendly) – and soooo supersoft! I do not know many yarns that feel as good as this next to your skin – so it's ideal for shawls, hats and scarves as well as baby clothing. My patterns Matchmaker (DK-Version) and Naiada, as well as Braidsmaid, Heaven & Space, Buds & Bumbles and Brickless are perfect with this yarn, but also my hat patterns Tensfield, Langfield, Blunk the Hat turn out wonderfully in this yarn. The "Melange" colors of Cheeky Merino Joy by Rosy Green Wool have an interesting, almost rustic look to them – while being just as soft as their solid cousins! This is achieved by dyeing a part of the white merino fiber in a dark color before it is spun in to yarn. The colors that are dyed on the skeins will then have a beautiful heathered effect. The sample "Knitters DNA" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of two skeins of this yarn, colorway "Sea Green". The sample "Rose Candy" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was knit out of 1 skein of this yarn in color "Eismeer" and 1 skein in color "Nachthimmel".  My patterns  Obvious, Shore Hap Joy, Shrug & More, Corners, Edges, Stripes and  Liebe Hannah were written specifically for this yarn.

BC Garn Loch Lomond Bio
Color BC Yarn: 18 Erika
A typical British Tweed Yarn: Loch Lomond is woolen spun, that means it has a nice volume and at the same time a good long yardage. This results in very light garments. The rustic look with the typical tweed nups inspires you for warm shawls. And last but not least: It is GOTS certified, that means from sheep to dye stuff, from production to stock keeping and packing, each step is inspected carefully and in line with very strict organic and social standards.Voluminous, with a rustic look and a soft and comfy feel: That’s “Loch Lomond Bio” by BC Garn, a lightweight Tweed inspired by British traditions. Just as its name – Loch Lomond is said to be the most beautiful lake in Scotland, located in a stunning National Park. So it only makes sense that this yarn is certified organic: The wool comes from small farms in Argentina that comply with the strict rules of the “Global Organic Textile Standard” (GOTS), as does the spinning mill that processes the fiber, and even the offices and storage at BC Garn in northern Germany. “We are required to work in an energy-efficient way, recycle and offer fair working conditions to our employees”, says Britta Kremke, owner of BC Garn. The standards are obligatory for every step of the production – so the knitter can be sure that the yarn she holds in her hands is made in an animal-friendly and sustainable fashion. The sample "Tough & Toasty" in our book "Strickmich!
