Got this skein of pretty gradient yarn and still looking for the perfect pattern? Here it is: Make a simple but cleverly constructed hat that brings out the beauty of those color changes. Or pick up some colorful sock yarn leftovers and go crazy with stripes! It will fit your head (or your husbands’ or your toddler’s) perfectly, no matter what weight your yarn is or what gauge you are knitting at. You can adjust the size as you go. The knitting is straight-forward back-and-forth garter stitch, but you will certainly enjoy the interesting 3-dimensional construction. This hat is a quick knit that even adventurous beginners will be able to master. The name? The angled stripes reminded me of the fields surrounding our village.

This is a beanie pattern. If you prefer a slouchier hat or one that you can fold up, have a look at Langfield.

Techniques: Garter stitch, k2tog, increases by m1 and kfb. When finishing this hat, you can either use a 3-needle-bind-off for the little remaining gap at the top or grafting. Don’t worry if you have never done this before – I have an instructional video here.

This yarn "Gradient" by German manufacturer Schoppel consists of 100% wool, is light and voluminous due to its slightly felted structure and has most stunning color variations. Perfect for interestingly constructed hats and voluminous shawls and cowls. Schoppel yarns are made with mulesing-free wool sourced in South America."Wood Warbler Cowl" was designed for 2 different balls of this yarn (colors "Schatten" and "Gelbfilter") The color changes make the knitting extra fun, and the result looks just cool and special. The yarn is light, soft and durable. 100 g are sufficient for an adult sized hat. It´s also perfect to make a thicker Hitchhiker, Lintilla or Easy shawl (please order two balls). The sample "Tensfield" from the book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was knit out of 60 g of this yarn, colorway "Papagei".

Schoppel Edition 3

Color Schoppel: Taupunkt

Just as pretty and colorful as the Crazy Zauberball, but a little more voluminous and made out of 100% soft, mulesing-free Merino fiber from Patagonia: the very cute "Edition 3" balls by Zauberball maker Schoppel in southern Germany. Without any artificial fiber content, they are perfect for everyone who likes their knitting natural, but colorful. The yardage is perfect for substantial shawls (300 m per 100 g), and if you use 3.5 to 4 mm (US 4-6) needles, you will get a pretty drape and a pleasant fabric, and – bonus! – they will be done in a little less time thatn your usual fingering weight shawl. The long color changes make the knitting so much fun and will make any Hitchhiker, Hitchhiker Beyond, Easy or Puerto Montt into a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece. If you are making little shawls for kids, one ball will be enough – but if you are making a shawlette or scarf for a grown-up, we recommend using at least 3 balls (150 g) of this yarn.For "Hitchhiker" and "Feldmark" we recommend 150 g (3 balls) of this yarn. Strickmich! Bowl – Accessory Pouch

S quaring the circle with this extra-warm and extra pretty hat: Circle & Square! You start with an oval, working in the round and end with a square, all completely seamless and without any purl stitches. The unusual construction looks especially attractive in a self-striping or gradient yarn. The fabric is doubled in the spots that count (ears!), so it’s perfect for icy-cold winter days. Work it in a fingering-weight yarn or choose the yarn you like – the size is adaptable to the wearer’s head circumference. When I invented the “Tensfield” and “Langfield” hats, my focus was on a seamless hat that could be adjusted to the wearer’s head during the knitting. My family and I are super-fond of our hats and wear them all the time – but my geometrically inclined mind would not stop reasoning until it found a way to make such a hat that would also be symmetrical. So here is Blunk, a cousin to the Tensfield hat that you will certainly enjoy knitting, too! As usual, you can use anything you have in your stash as gauge does not matter at all, and you can adjust it to a newborn’s head as well as to your own. This hat will turn out particularly nice in a handspun yarn with long color changes like Schoppel Crazy Zauberball. The name? “Blunk” is the village next to Tensfeld, right around the corner from Damsdorf, my home.

Make a hat that will fit anyone from baby to adult! No matter what kind of yarn you use, what size your head is or what gauge you are knitting at: This hat is adjusted as you go, you can make it tight or a little looser, and you can also choose how long you want it to be.
