The Hitchhiker Collection - 20 Knitted Shawls by Martina Behm

Product information "The Hitchhiker Collection - 20 Knitted Shawls by Martina Behm"
With more than 32,000 projects, “Hitchhiker” is one of the most successful knitting patterns worldwide. Its innovative shape and biased construction have been popular for a decade, likely because it looks awesome in colorful, hand-dyed yarns. Plus: one skein will suffice to make a wearable shawl! The Hitchhiker has inspired many other designs, and its inventor has used it as a canvas as well: in “The Hitchhiker Collection”, Martina Behm proves how creatively she uses her own construction. Loops and helixes, zig-zags and lace, ruffles and interesting structures look great in the Hitchhiker shape! In this collection, you will find 20 projects suitable for beginners and more experienced knitters alike – and quite a few that will help you acquire more skills and try out new techniques. Three out of 20 patterns are new and exclusive to the book.

In this book you will find 17 well known designs by Martina Behm plus 3 new ones:

Stricken macht Schön
This book is only available in german. The Knitter, Sabrina Special, 08.2013

Hitchhiker
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Well, if you use a 150 g skein of Wollmeise 100% Merino for this, you can make how many teeth? That‘s right, 42. The answer to the question about the universe and everything, according to Douglas Adams‘ wonderful book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“. So don‘t forget your towel, and happy knitting! The pattern "Hitchhiker" is avaliable in Martina Behm´s books "The Hitchhiker Collection" and "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions"

Trillian PDF Download
Language: Deutsch
„Trillian“ is the leading female character in Douglas Adams‘ great book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“. She‘s a mathematician and astrophysicist, and if she took up knitting, no doubt she would enjoy the unusual construction of this shawlette: You start knitting at one corner, adding wider and wider rows, thereby forming a long, narrow, slightly asymmetrical triangle. Just perfect for wrapping around your neck several times or hug your shoulders with a little warmth. Due to the shallow-but-long shape, you will get something useful to wear, no matter how much yarn you have. The garter-stitch center is perfect for showcasing a beautiful hand-dyed yarn, because it makes the colors flow into each other naturally. The fishnet-lace border on both short sides of the triangle adds just a bit of femininity without being frilly. Manageable even for beginning knitters. The pattern "Trillian" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection"

Magrathea PDF Download
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Magrathea is a long and narrow, slightly asymmetrical triangular shawlette that features a squishy garter stitch body and a geometrical lace motif at the edges - just right for spring and early summer! In Douglas Adam‘s book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“, Magrathea is the planet where luxury custom-made planets are built to order. Its planet-building experts are especially famous for designing pretty coastlines – as the lace edging of this little shawlette. It is my third design (after „Hitchhiker“ and „Trillian“) that uses a special asymmetrical triangular construction. Pattern notes: You start at one corner of the triangle, add wider and wider rows and cast off at one of the short sides. The lace edging on one side is worked as you go, the other is formed by the last 30 rows before binding off. 100 g of fingering weight yarn is plenty to make a useful shawlette. Instructions are provided on how to make it larger. Charts only, lace parts are not given as written instructions. If you are interested in how I calculated the stitch count before starting the edge, please have a look here. The pattern "Magrathea" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Brickless

“Brickless” was designed for the Miss Babs 2012 Knitting Tour, and was exclusive to the members of the Tour for six months. Berlin in Winter is colder than most other big German cities – when travelling there, a big, cozy shawlette like this will come in handy! The beautiful colors are reminiscent of bright city lights in dark winter nights. The shape of the shawlette is an asymmetrical, long triangle, formed by rows that are getting longer and longer as you go. They are worked in different simple, but very effective patterns that make them look a little like a skyline of tall houses. These skyscrapers are not built with bricks, but concrete and steel – hence the name, „Brickless“. And also: No more bricks in the wall that used to divide Berlin. The pattern "Brickless" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Naiada
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Simple, elegant lace in a surprising, long, slightly asymmetrical triangular shape: That’s Naiada! Knit with a warm DK weight yarn in a beautiful color it will look great under your winter coat or wrapped around your shoulders for extra warmth over a shirt or sweater. Made of a bright blue you will be wearing your very private ocean!  You start at one corner of the triangle, adding wider and wider rows, thereby forming a long, slightly asymmetric triangle. The pattern will work at any gauge with any amount of yarn.  The lace pattern is very straightforward and easy to remember. You can work it using the (very simple) written instructions or the charts, whatever you prefer.  It’s really smooth sailing on the lace ocean which is also doable for beginning lace knitters. The beautiful yarn Amano Puna which I used for the sample is available in our shop. The pattern "Naiada" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Knit Your Love
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
When I got this beautiful yarn with its subtle silky shine, I just knew that its deep, cool red color would be the perfect “plus pink”! I have a lot of pink T-Shirts because it is a very flattering color for me (and many other women, too – you should try it!), and I just knew that a shawlette in this gorgeous Red would go beautifully with those. And when I listened closely, I could hear the yarn whisper: “I want to be hearts! Just in time for Valentine’s day!“ So I complied: This little asymmetric triangular shawlette has a garter stitch body and a line of pretty knitted hearts along one of the short sides, making it just the thing to wear on Valentine’s day – or any day you want to show or feel a little affection. Samadhi
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Pattern for the 2nd Strickmich! Club shipment 2014 Sometimes, the world around me seems a little bit too loud, too crowded, too busy. When that happens, I take out my knitting, find a place to sit and feel how the noise slowly disappears while I knit one stitch after another. As I focus on the work of my hands, I notice how my mind regains clarity and strength – a state called “Samadhi” in the ancient Asian language Pali. This little shawlette has received its name because it is such a relaxing knit that it feels almost like meditation to make it. The pale turquoise color with its special hand-dyed glow will take your eyes on a vacation, and the warm merino wool will feel like a soft breeze in your hands. The resulting shawlette has a subtle wavy border and is light and small enough to be worn in warmer weather. Measurements of the shawlette in the pictures: Length 150 cms (60 in), depth 27 cms (11 in) Instructions on how to make the shawl bigger, using the amount of yarn you choose are given in the pattern. The pattern "Samadhi" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Leftie
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Leftovers. Everyone has them, everyone hoards them – especially when they are some precious hand-dyed yarn that is not always in stock. Well, now their time has come: Leftie is an asymmetrical shawlette that was designed to show off your favorite little leftovers. The stripes will swirl around your neck in a very flattering way, and the cute tiny leaves are the perfect way to make your favorite colors shine (they are created by just a few short rows). It‘s all garter stitch, so the knitting is all fun and relaxing. There are quite a couple of ends to weave in, but that‘s no problem, right? You start with just three stitches, adding wider and wider rows and thereby forming a long and narrow triangle. The little leaves in contrast colors are formed by short rows that are explained in the pattern. This pattern, as the other triangular shawls I have designed, is very flexible: You can use any amount of yarn and end up with a small neckerchief, a small or bigger shawlette. The shawlette in the pictures used 165g of Wollmeise Pure 100% (approx. 130g in main color plus 5-7g of each of six different colors of contrasting leftovers). The pattern "Leftie" is part of Martina Behms book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Jasminde
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
This pattern was part of Strickmich! Club 2014. If you are a beginning lace knitter, this is for you!  When I first saw a skein of yarn in this beautiful berry-pinkish color, I immediately felt that it needed to be something very, very pretty. Definitely lace, but not too frilly. Geometric and delicate, but simple enough to make it an enjoyable knitting experience. So here is “Jasminde”, a triangular, asymmetric shawl that you will be able to wrap yourself into and instantly feel beautiful! With only 150 grams of “Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure“, you will knit a generously sized shawl that is 250 cm (100 inches) long and will not only be pretty to look at, but also keep you warm when autumn arrives. The pattern is flexible regarding the amount of yarn you have and the size you want your shawl to be: Just leave about 10% of your total amount of yarn for the edging, and you will be fine. The English version of the printed pattern does NOT contain a written-out version, CHARTS ONLY.The pattern "Jasminde" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Heaven & Space
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
To us knitters, heaven can be a luxurious cashmere blend, caressing our fingers while we knit. Heaven can be a pattern so simple and intuitive, just using knit and purl stitches, knitting up to a beautiful shawlette with an intriguing geometric pattern. Heaven is when something you knit is so soft you never want to take it off again. Heaven can be that very special color only our favorite dyer can achieve. Heaven can have many dimensions and interesting structures, like space – and very much like this shawlette when left unblocked. Heaven can be big, smooth, shiny and beautiful, like this shawlette after blocking. Heaven is a pattern that uses exactly the amount of yarn you have. Heaven can also be a daydream while we knit, maybe of a trip through space, to galaxies far away, leaving all troubles on earth behind us. So here’s “Heaven and Space”, the perfect shawlette to embody just that. If you prefer to block your shawl, the pattern will lay flat. You can choose to knit as many repeats as you like, making the pattern adaptable to the amount of yarn you have. Contains charts and written-out pattern. The pattern "Heaven & Space" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Baltic Summer
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Summers of my childhood were spent camping on the island Fehmarn (Baltic Sea), where my father had grown up and my mom had strong family ties. During the six weeks of summer vacation, we had a few lazy sunny days at the beach, where we snacked on rolls with cheese and wurst prepared in the morning that had that certain beachy taste and crunched from the grains of sand they had gathered. Most of the time it rained hard, and we would sit in our caravan playing cards, snuggled up in the few summer clothes we had packed while being too optimistic about the weather. On those days, this shawlette would have been perfect: The colors of the Baltic Sea and the rain, and a pattern of small summery waves, adding just a little warmth on not-so-hot summer days. The shawlette is knit on the bias, giving the classic chevron pattern an unusual twist. Each side of the triangle shows a differently shaped wave – just like the Baltic Sea in wild weather. In this video I talk about the yarn and the pattern. Measurements Length 140 cm (56 in), Depth 32 cm (13 in) Shawlette size is adaptable to the amount of yarn you have. The pattern "Baltic Summer" is part of Martina Behms book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Buds & Bumbles
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Every summer I find myself suddenly without anything hand-knit to wear – even the biggest wool-lovers among us will have to admit that Merino tends to lose its appeal once it’s 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) or more. So this summer I thought I would be clever and knit myself a shawlette out of a nice cotton yarn with long color changes. It has a cute little bud-stitch pattern that has a subtle lace-like appearance, biased construction and wavy or pointy edges. You can knit it until your yarn is used up, just to the size you love to wear. Knit it now using a cotton or cotton blend so you will have it ready for next summer (unlike me, who finished it just now in the fall), or use a cozy woolen yarn with pretty color changes like Schoppel Zauberball Cotton to be stylish and warm this season. Measurements of shawlette in the pictures: 167 cm (67 in) x 48 cm (19 in) We carry the pretty and amazing yarn Schoppel Zauberball Cotton here in Strickmich! Knitters’ DNA
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Knitters are special people. We love to transform what sheep and creative handdyers offer us into warm, useful and fun items. We gush over beautifully dyed skeins, we stroke them and hold them next to our skin, we admire the depth of color and feel that an evening spent without knitting is somehow not right. We help and respect each other, and we care about our loved ones so much that we will work hours knitting socks and hats for them once winter approaches. Knitters are enthusiastic, caring and wonderful! This asymmetric shawlette with its double helix border is here to celebrate how special knitters are, and how special all of you are to me. You make the world more colorful, more beautiful and so much warmer, and you deserve to be celebrated. The border evolves during the knitting and is attached on the go, there is no sewing or seaming involved. There are a few wraps and turns, minimal purling and lots of mindless knitting with an unusual result. Make it out of a striking, deep semisolid to show off the 3-dimensional border, or use a low-contrast multicolor to make it extra pretty. The pattern "Knitters' DNA" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection". For this pattern you need 2 skeins Cheeky Merino Joy from Rosy Green Wool

Miss Winkle PDF Download
Language: Deutsch
One of my favorite sitcoms is “The Big Bang Theory“. In one episode, nerdy physicist Leonard dates his colleague Leslie Winkle and they have a fierce argument about which version of Quantum Mechanics is correct – String Theory or Loop Quantum Gravity. When Leonard declares that he prefers his space “stringy, not loopy“, that’s a dealbreaker for Leslie (”How will we raise the children?“). This very loopy shawlette is here to celebrate Miss Winkle, women scientists and all women who know what they want and don’t let any man talk them out of it! Miss Winkle is an asymmetric shawlette in garter stitch that looks fabulous in a variegated hand-dyed yarn. You start with one little loop, adding longer and longer rows that form a very long triangle. The loops are created using a simple twist technique that I show in an instructional video and are really fun to make. There are almost no purl stitches, so this is a very relaxing but quick project that is perfect for beginners and young knitters – and a great project on-the-go for knitting experts. You can use any amount of yarn because you just knit this pattern until your yarn is used up. The yarn used for the shawlette in the pictures ("Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply", colorway "Deep Sea Jellyfish") is availble here at Strickmich! Shop. The pattern "Miss Winkle" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection".

Halley
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Like a shower of comets and stars, criss-crossing through the sky – that’s what Alexandra of Zauberwiese thought of when she created this beautiful colorway for Strickmich! Club. So I picked up this theme for the design of a lacy shawl: The garter stitch gives way to an ever-growing assembly of geometric comet traces. The shawl is named “Halley” after Halley’s Comet, which is visible from Earth every 74 to 79 years, even without a telescope. The subtle color speckles on a stunning blue background make the shawl even more interesting to knit and wear – reminding you of the wonders of the universe while it warms your shoulders. You can use a yarn with 400-500 m per 100 g for this, like e. g. Amano Ayni or Manos del Uruguay AlegriaThe pattern "Halley" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection"

Tivoli Gardens
Formate: PDF Download | Language: Deutsch
Come with me to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark: A beautiful city by the baltic sea, with colorful houses, lots of bikes, relaxed happy people and a tradition of yummy candies and sweets! When you visit Copenhagen, don’t forget to stroll over the Tivoli, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks (it was opened in 1843). The rides have this cute vintage feel, and the candy shops offer sweets that look like they come directly from a fairytale. I thought this would be a great last destination for our Strickmich! Club year 2019 – so I designed a candy-colored asymmetric shawl with alternating garter stitch and ruffled parts. It’s an easy knit, and you will know the pattern by heart in no time, making this project the ideal knitting companion for your next trip to your favorite amusement park. The pattern "Tivoli Gardens" is part of Martina Behm´s book "The Hitchhiker Collection"

Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy
Color Rosy Green Wool: 250 Melange Seegrün
This yarn is pure joy: 100% Merino superwash from Argentina, spun in a traditional mill in the UK, GOTS-certified (i. e. produced animal- and eco-friendly) – and soooo supersoft! I do not know many yarns that feel as good as this next to your skin – so it's ideal for shawls, hats and scarves as well as baby clothing. My patterns Matchmaker (DK-Version) and Naiada, as well as Braidsmaid, Heaven & Space, Buds & Bumbles and Brickless are perfect with this yarn, but also my hat patterns Tensfield, Langfield, Blunk the Hat turn out wonderfully in this yarn. The "Melange" colors of Cheeky Merino Joy by Rosy Green Wool have an interesting, almost rustic look to them – while being just as soft as their solid cousins! This is achieved by dyeing a part of the white merino fiber in a dark color before it is spun in to yarn. The colors that are dyed on the skeins will then have a beautiful heathered effect. The sample "Knitters DNA" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of two skeins of this yarn, colorway "Sea Green". The sample "Rose Candy" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was knit out of 1 skein of this yarn in color "Eismeer" and 1 skein in color "Nachthimmel".  My patterns  Obvious, Shore Hap Joy, Shrug & More, Corners, Edges, Stripes and  Liebe Hannah were written specifically for this yarn.
