Oh, those colorful hand-dyed yarn skeins that can be real divas when it comes to finding the right pattern! How about this: A soft, stretchy cape-cowl-hybrid that extends right below your shoulders and replaces a scarf beneath your jacket or cardigan. I love that it does not leave any gaps at the neck where the cold wind can sneak in, as scarves usually do. Vertical garter stitch (no purling required!) really emphasizes the beautiful color variations, short rows prevent funny pooling and guarantee a comfy shoulder-hugging fit. You can button it up for extra warmth or leave the collar open for a more relaxed look.
I named this pattern after Italian jazz- and chanson singer Caterina Valente who was a huge success in the 1950s in Germany. And also a diva, in the best sense of the word.
This 2-ply superwash Merino is wonderful for cowls, scarves, shawls, and lightweight sweaters. One skein of this will make a beautiful Miss Winkle, Hitchhiker, Fractal Danger, Samadhi or Lintilla. The sample "Hitchhiker" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Hitchhiker's Birthday". The sample "Miss Winkle" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Deep Sea Jellyfish".The sample "Hope & Confidence" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Zombie Prom".The sample "Hitchiker Beyond" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Dream Weaver". Care Instructions: Machine wash gentle. This yarn should be dried flat for best results.
This is probably the softest sock yarn in the whole wild world – and it's made out of mulesing-free Merino fiber from South Africa. Hence the name! Besides the softness, the best thing about this yarn is that it is color-changing: As you knit, exciting stripes in a number of color combinations will emerge. It's perfect for an interestingly constructed shawl like Easy, Puerto Montt or Match & Move. "Lazy Lion" is superwash and consists of 25% Nylon, so it will be durable enough for socks and other hard-wearing garments – all of this while being incredibly soft!
The sample "Trillian" from our book "Hitchhiker Collection" was made out of one skein of this yarn, colorway "Brittas Favorite".The sample "Puerto Montt" on the cover of "Strickmich! Knitting Innovations" was knit out of 2 skeins of this yarn, colorway "Flower Bed". The knitted cover of Strickplaner 2020 was made out of this yarn in the colorway "Bunch of Roses".
Just as pretty and colorful as the Crazy Zauberball, but a little more voluminous and made out of 100% soft, mulesing-free Merino fiber from Patagonia: the very cute "Edition 3" balls by Zauberball maker Schoppel in southern Germany. Without any artificial fiber content, they are perfect for everyone who likes their knitting natural, but colorful. The yardage is perfect for substantial shawls (300 m per 100 g), and if you use 3.5 to 4 mm (US 4-6) needles, you will get a pretty drape and a pleasant fabric, and – bonus! – they will be done in a little less time thatn your usual fingering weight shawl. The long color changes make the knitting so much fun and will make any Hitchhiker, Hitchhiker Beyond, Easy or Puerto Montt into a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece. If you are making little shawls for kids, one ball will be enough – but if you are making a shawlette or scarf for a grown-up, we recommend using at least 3 balls (150 g) of this yarn. For "Hitchhiker" we recommend 150 g (3 balls) of this yarn.
For the sample "Strider" from our book "Strickmich! Knitting Inventions" we recommend 150 g (3 balls) of this yarn.

So cozy, so comfy, so colorful: Broaden your horizons with Panoramic Cowl! It’s a great project to round off our Strickmich! Club motto “Naturally Nature” of 2020, as the colorway (“Landscape”) and the construction celebrate the beauty of what is around us.
“Panoramic Cowl” is just the thing to add a little color and warmth to your winter wardrobe! The construction is unusual but very simple and a pleasure to knit. The yarn is creatively dyed and feels amazing when wearing it. Your neck and chest will be warm and protected from chilly winds outside, and nothing will come off or be exposed. Ideal for wearing when riding your bike, skiing, hiking or just taking a walk with your favorite four- or two-legged friends to enjoy the panoramic views in your neighborhood.
This pattern was exclusive to members of Strickmich! Club during the first six months after its publication in 2020. The colorway "Landscape" was dyed exclusively for us by Tieke Garne.
Fascinating! Quadra Cowl will change its appearance just as you wish: It's especially fun when made out of a self-striping yarn or a mini-skeins. The construction comes together automatically during the knitting, no sewing or seaming required. All important steps are explained in the accompanying videos. As the cowl is double-layered and extra warm, it will be a useful addition to your winter wardrobe!
The cowls in the pictures are made out of two sets of Zauberperlen by Schoppel (200 g in total, colorways Samarkand and Arabesk) or four balls of Edition 3 by Schoppel (colorway Englischer Garten). You can choose other yarns if you wish (e.g. Lazy Lion or Crazy Zauberball), just make sure it is not too bulky.
Please note that you will need three circular needles of the same size to make this (only for one round), length 80 cm (32 in) or more, preferably in different colors, plus four stitch markers.
Rose Candy was the last pattern of Strickmich! Club 2015.
Warm and fun – that’s what a knitting project for the cold season should be like to cheer us up during the dark days of winter. Make a cozy stripey cowl in garter stitch, just knitting back and forth and joining the parts modularly. No purling, no seaming, just pure fun with stripes! If you have twice the amount of yarn available, you can make your cowl longer so that it doubles as a very warm scarf – the sweet icing on the cake of our Strickmich! Club year 2015! The yarn is an animal-friendly supersoft merino in a very special, limited colorway that will make your cheeks glow with joy.
Here is a video in which I talk about the yarn and the design:
