Garter stitch. It‘s simple, it‘s warm and squishy, stretchy and reversible and it makes any variegated, hand-dyed sockyarn really shine. So here‘s Hitchhiker: It is a narrow, slightly asymmetrically shaped triangular shawlette that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The ends are long enough to tie it with a knot. One of the short sides of the triangle features a saw-tooth border that evolves naturally during the knitting and gives the shawl its unusual shape. Because the knitting starts at one end, you can stop anytime, bind off and end up with a useful neckerchief, shawlette or shawl. A perfect project to relax in between more complicated ones, also very suitable for beginners and young knitters. The name? Magrathea is a long and narrow, slightly asymmetrical triangular shawlette that features a squishy garter stitch body and a geometrical lace motif at the edges - just right for spring and early summer! In Douglas Adam‘s book „The Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy“, Magrathea is the planet where luxury custom-made planets are built to order. Its planet-building experts are especially famous for designing pretty coastlines – as the lace edging of this little shawlette. It is my third design (after „Hitchhiker“ and „Trillian“) that uses a special asymmetrical triangular construction. Pattern notes: You start at one corner of the triangle, add wider and wider rows and cast off at one of the short sides.The lace edging on one side is worked as you go, the other is formed by the last 30 rows before binding off. 100 g of fingering weight yarn is plenty to make a useful shawlette. Instructions are provided on how to make it larger. Charts only, lace parts are not given as written instructions. “Brickless” was designed for the Miss Babs 2012 Knitting Tour, and was exclusive to the members of the Tour for six months. Berlin in Winter is colder than most other big German cities – when travelling there, a big, cozy shawlette like this will come in handy! The beautiful colors are reminiscent of bright city lights in dark winter nights. The shape of the shawlette is an asymmetrical, long triangle, formed by rows that are getting longer and longer as you go. They are worked in different simple, but very effective patterns that make them look a little like a skyline of tall houses. These skyscrapers are not built with bricks, but concrete and steel – hence the name, „Brickless“. When I got this beautiful yarn with its subtle silky shine, I just knew that its deep, cool red color would be the perfect “plus pink”! I have a lot of pink T-Shirts because it is a very flattering color for me (and many other women, too – you should try it!), and I just knew that a shawlette in this gorgeous Red would go beautifully with those. Pattern for the 2nd Strickmich! Club shipment 2014: Sometimes, the world around me seems a little bit too loud, too crowded, too busy. When that happens, I take out my knitting, find a place to sit and feel how the noise slowly disappears while I knit one stitch after another. As I focus on the work of my hands, I notice how my mind regains clarity and strength – a state called “Samadhi” in the ancient Asian language Pali. This little shawlette has received its name because it is such a relaxing knit that it feels almost like meditation to make it. The pale turquoise color with its special hand-dyed glow will take your eyes on a vacation, and the warm merino wool will feel like a soft breeze in your hands. The resulting shawlette has a subtle wavy border and is light and small enough to be worn in warmer weather. Leftovers. Everyone has them, everyone hoards them – especially when they are some precious hand-dyed yarn that is not always in stock.Well, now their time has come: Leftie is an asymmetrical shawlette that was designed to show off your favorite little leftovers.The stripes will swirl around your neck in a very flattering way, and the cute tiny leaves are the perfect way to make your favorite colors shine (they are created by just a few short rows). It‘s all garter stitch, so the knitting is all fun and relaxing. There are quite a couple of ends to weave in, but that‘s no problem, right? This pattern was part of Strickmich! Club 2014. If you are a beginning Lace knitter, this is for you!  When I first saw a skein of yarn in this beautiful berry-pinkish color, I immediately felt that it needed to be something very, very pretty. Definitely lace, but not too frilly. Geometric and delicate, but simple enough to make it an enjoyable knitting experience. So here is “Jasminde”, a triangular, asymmetric shawl that you will be able to wrap yourself into and instantly feel beautiful! With only 150 grams of “Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure“, you will knit a generously sized shawl that is 250 cm (100 inches) long and will not only be pretty to look at, but also keep you warm when autumn arrives. The pattern is flexible regarding the amount of yarn you have and the size you want your shawl to be: Just leave about 10% of your total amount of yarn for the edging, and you will be fine. Summers of my childhood were spent camping on the island Fehmarn (Baltic Sea), where my father had grown up and my mom had strong family ties. During the six weeks of summer vacation, we had a few lazy sunny days at the beach, where we snacked on rolls with cheese and wurst prepared in the morning that had that certain beachy taste and crunched from the grains of sand they had gathered. Most of the time it rained hard, and we would sit in our caravan playing cards, snuggled up in the few summer clothes we had packed while being too optimistic about the weather. On those days, this shawlette would have been perfect: The colors of the Baltic Sea and the rain, and a pattern of small summery waves, adding just a little warmth on not-so-hot summer days.The shawlette is knit on the bias, giving the classic chevron pattern an unusual twist. Each side of the triangle shows a differently shaped wave – just like the Baltic Sea in wild weather. In this video I talk about the yarn and the pattern. Every summer I find myself suddenly without anything hand-knit to wear – even the biggest wool-lovers among us will have to admit that Merino tends to lose its appeal once it’s 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) or more. So this summer I thought I would be clever and knit myself a shawlette out of a nice cotton yarn with long color changes. It has a cute little bud-stitch pattern that has a subtle lace-like appearance, biased construction and wavy or pointy edges. You can knit it until your yarn is used up, just to the size you love to wear. Knit it now using a cotton or cotton blend so you will have it ready for next summer (unlike me, who finished it just now in the fall), or use a cozy woolen yarn with pretty color changes like Schoppel Zauberball Cotton to be stylish and warm this season. One of my favorite sitcoms is “The Big Bang Theory“. In one episode, nerdy physicist Leonard dates his colleague Leslie Winkle and they have a fierce argument about which version of Quantum Mechanics is correct – String Theory or Loop Quantum Gravity. When Leonard declares that he prefers his space “stringy, not loopy“, that’s a dealbreaker for Leslie (”How will we raise the children?“). This very loopy shawlette is here to celebrate Miss Winkle, women scientists and all women who know what they want and don’t let any man talk them out of it! Miss Winkle is an asymmetric shawlette in garter stitch that looks fabulous in a variegated hand-dyed yarn. You start with one little loop, adding longer and longer rows that form a very long triangle. The loops are created using a simple twist technique that I show in an instructional video and are really fun to make. There are almost no purl stitches, so this is a very relaxing but quick project that is perfect for beginners and young knitters – and a great project on-the-go for knitting experts. You can use any amount of yarn because you just knit this pattern until your yarn is used up. Like a shower of comets and stars, criss-crossing through the sky – that’s what Alexandra of Zauberwiese thought of when she created this beautiful colorway for Strickmich! Club. So I picked up this theme for the design of a lacy shawl: The garter stitch gives way to an ever-growing assembly of geometric comet traces. The shawl is named “Halley” after Halley’s Comet, which is visible from Earth every 74 to 79 years, even without a telescope. The subtle color speckles on a stunning blue background make the shawl even more interesting to knit and wear – reminding you of the wonders of the universe while it warms your shoulders. The rides have this cute vintage feel, and the candy shops offer sweets that look like they come directly from a fairytale. I thought this would be a great last destination for our Strickmich! Club year 2019 – so I designed a candy-colored asymmetric shawl with alternating garter stitch and ruffled parts. Kremke Soul Wool Lazy Lion Sock Yarn

Sustainable Softness from Peru Extra warm, extra soft and extra good for our planet – that’s the way we love a beautiful yarn, and the amazing alpaca yarns by Amano are just that! The fiber comes from cooperatives in Peru which employ the latest methods to ensure an animal-friendly environment and minimal impact on the surroundings. The high plains of the Andes are home to three and a half million alpacas. They have been living in this area for more than 5000 years and learned to thrive despite the rough climate and scarce food supply, earning their wool a reputation to be the most sustainable animal fiber there is. Alpaca fiber is significantly warmer than wool from sheep, it is very soft and has an attractive lustre – a dream for any knitter. It is processed by a spinning mill in the south of Peru to become one of the luxurious knitting yarns by Amano: blended with silk, merino or cashmere or pure as Baby or Imperial Alpaca in gorgeous, vibrant colors inspired by the textile traditions of South America.  Puna is made from 100% Baby Alpaca, yardage is about 250 meters / 273 yards / 100 g, so it's perfect for large but light, warm shawls like Naiada (two skeins of this yarn, colorway "Kornblumenblau"). "Fino" by Manos del Uruguay is a voluminous single-ply consisting of 30% silk and 70% merino wool – really soft and perfect for a pretty shawl like Samadhi, Baltic Summer, Hitchhiker, Heaven & Space or Lintilla. The multicolored versions are perfect for Martina's designs, and one skein of 450 m per 100 g will yield a decently sized shawl. The yarn is hand dyed by a cooperative in Uruguay that offers employment to rural women in difficult life situations. This yarn is pure joy: 100% Merino superwash from Argentina, spun in a traditional mill in the UK, GOTS-certified (i. e. produced animal- and eco-friendly) – and soooo supersoft! I do not know many yarns that feel as good as this next to your skin – so it's ideal for shawls, hats and scarves as well as baby clothing. My patterns Matchmaker (DK-Version) and Naiada, as well as Braidsmaid, Heaven & Space, Buds & Bumbles and Brickless are perfect with this yarn, but also my hat patterns Tensfield, Langfield, Blunk the Hat turn out wonderfully in this yarn.The "Melange" colors of Cheeky Merino Joy by Rosy Green Wool have an interesting, almost rustic look to them – while being just as soft as their solid cousins! This is achieved by dyeing a part of the white merino fiber in a dark color before it is spun in to yarn.
